On September 4, 1781, a group of forty-four settlers known as " Los Pobladores" founded the pueblo (town) they called El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles, 'The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels'. In 1771, Franciscan friar Junípero Serra directed the building of the Mission San Gabriel Arcángel, the first mission in the area. This was also endorsed in 1952 by a "jury" appointed by Mayor Fletcher Bowron to devise an official pronunciation. In 1934, the United States Board on Geographic Names decreed that this pronunciation be used. Since the 1930s, / l ɔː s ˈ æ n dʒ əl ə s/ has been most common. In the early 1900s, the Los Angeles Times advocated for pronouncing it Loce AHNG-hayl-ais ( / l oʊ s ˈ ɑː ŋ h eɪ l eɪ s/), approximating Spanish, by printing the respelling under its masthead for several years. In 1908, librarian Charles Fletcher Lummis, who argued for the name's pronunciation with a hard g ( / ɡ/), reported that there were at least 12 pronunciation variants. A 1953 article in the journal of the American Name Society asserts that the pronunciation / l ɔː s ˈ æ n dʒ əl ə s/ lawss AN-jəl-əs was established following the 1850 incorporation of the city and that since the 1880s the pronunciation / l oʊ s ˈ æ ŋ ɡ əl ə s/ lohss ANG-gəl-əs emerged out of a trend in California to give places Spanish, or Spanish-sounding, names and pronunciations. The local English pronunciation of the name of the city has varied over time. More recently, statewide droughts in California have strained both the city’s and Los Angeles County’s water security. Los Angeles hosted the 19 Summer Olympics and will host the 2028 Summer Olympics. In 2018, the Los Angeles metropolitan area had a gross metropolitan product of over $1.0 trillion, making it the city with the third-largest GDP in the world, after New York City and Tokyo. It has the busiest container port in the Americas. Los Angeles has a diverse economy with a broad range of industries. The city was further expanded with the completion of the Los Angeles Aqueduct in 1913, which delivers water from Eastern California. The discovery of oil in the 1890s brought rapid growth to the city. Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850, five months before California achieved statehood. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican–American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, and thus became part of the United States. It became a part of Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence. The city was founded on September 4, 1781, under Spanish governor Felipe de Neve, on the village of Yaanga. The area that became Los Angeles was originally inhabited by the indigenous Tongva people and later claimed by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo for Spain in 1542. It covers about 469 square miles (1,210 km 2), and is the county seat of Los Angeles County, which is the most populous county in the United States with an estimated 9.86 million residents as of 2022. The majority of the city proper lies in a basin in Southern California adjacent to the Pacific Ocean in the west and extending partly through the Santa Monica Mountains and north into the San Fernando Valley, with the city bordering the San Gabriel Valley to its east. With a population of roughly 3.9 million residents within the city limits as of 2020, Los Angeles is known for its Mediterranean climate, ethnic and cultural diversity, being the home of the Hollywood film industry, and its sprawling metropolitan area. Los Angeles is the largest city in the state of California, the second most populous city in the United States after New York City, and one of the world's most populous megacities. 'The Angels'), often referred to by its initials L.A., is the commercial, financial, and cultural center of Southern California. DESIGN YOUR JUMPS Create the perfect track with the revolutionary new editor. The physics are said to have been much improved over MXGP 2019 (which I didn’t play), and the free-roam Compound (set on a lake in Norway) looks gorgeous. MXGP 2020 actually looks really fun for anyone who wants to rip through mud on a motorbike without actually getting dirty. There are post-launch additions mentioned toward the bottom of the page I linked, but the track editor seems like it was very much intended to be included with the game at launch. And the official MXGP website has some text dedicated to the feature, again, without any disclaimer saying it’s not a day-one feature. On top of that, the track editor is still listed as a feature on the official Milestone website, without any small-text warning saying the feature is “coming soon” or what have you. Players also have the opportunity to create their own hero, and the appearance of both his and his motorbike can be adjusted using 10,000 different objects - these are licensed things, related to more than a hundred brands associated with this. I also assume that the tagline “Infinite ways to have fun” is referring to this. With the heightmap-based track editor and using your wildest imagination, you can design a track that is challenging enough to give you goosebumps while you are immersed in beating the other. MXGP 2020 uses a FIM licence - Fdration Internationale de Motocyclisme - which allows you to find more than sixty drivers and nearly twenty tracks of the famous real world (more specifically, the 2020 season of the MXGP and MX2 racing classes). Especially considering the official launch trailer, which also came out today, mentions it specifically. That said, something about MXGP 2020 grabbed my attention, so I’ve been casually following it for the past couple months.īut the lack of track editor seems like a huge misstep. I don’t pay attention to the motocross scene, I don’t watch races, and if I’m being completely honest, I don’t think I’ve ever even ridden a motorbike in real life. There are rumors that it will be coming in an update within the next week or so, but it’s not here yet. That said, the game also launched without one of its core features: MXGP 2020 has no track editor at the time of this writing. I guess Milestone just assumes the hardcore motocross folks are going to buy it either way. Oddly, the game launched with very little in the way of fanfare, hype, or really advertisement of any kind. Today marks the launch of MXGP 2020, the latest motocross sim from Milestone. The original article is posted below in its entirety. Update: The track editor was added in a patch the day after launch. They require relearning how to do things that you did reliably the day before. There's nothing wrong with helpful new features, but too often those helpful new features come with a price. None of that is immediately, obviously useful on its own, but all of which opens the door for some new and potentially very powerful Vim extensions. To stick with Vim as an example, version eight does have a bunch of cool new stuff, like support for asynchronous I/O, channels, JSON, jobs, timers and GTK+ 3 among other things. New ideas come along and in many cases they're good ideas, better than what was there before. The desire for the latest and greatest is a mental trap we all fall into to some degree. It ain't broke, why am I trying to fix it? I put down the shiny new stuff and got back to work. It does what the client wants to do well enough that they want me to port it to another part of their business. Is there anything wrong with it? Well, in a couple of places yes, but by and large, no. But then I stopped myself and stepped back and looked at the actual code. And I'll admit my first instinct was to rewrite the code in something more modern. I recently took on a new client with a codebase written in Symfony 1.0, which is old enough that I had to use just to find an overview of it. So much of software development these days feels like reinventing the wheel for the sake of it. GNU Emacs began life in the 1970s and is currently at version 25, which means it averages two releases to Vim's one, but still definitely on the slow side. Interestingly, though, Vim's biggest rival, GNU Emacs, has a roughly similar development pace. In today's world, where web browsers drop major point updates (what they consider major, anyway) several times a year, Vim's lack of major updates is not just refreshing, but speaks of an entirely different approach to developing software.Įven leaving aside the absurd version system of today's web browsers, eight releases in 25 years would be considered slow by today's software development standards. Ordinarily the update of a text editor wouldn't be worth mentioning, but this is the first major Vim release in ten years. To celebrate Vim's anniversary, creator Bram Moolenaar recently dropped version 8.0. Open Source Insider Vim text editor turned 25 late last year – the first public iteration was launched on November 2, 1991, a couple of weeks after Linus Torvalds announced Linux. No, me neither.) The development of Pro Tools 9 was thus driven by a public wish-list that Avid have posted and maintained at. (This, apparently, has involved a shift to an 'agile development' model, in which their engineers become 'pigs' or 'chickens' and are divided into 'scrum teams'. At recent industry events, Avid have been keen to emphasise that the opening up of Pro Tools 9 is not a reluctant move, but one that reflects a sea change in corporate culture. The restriction of having to use Avid's own hardware was also becoming acute.Įnter a new management regime at Avid and a shift from 'engineering led' to 'customer focused' development. By version 8, the Pro Tools native range had become fragmented and confusing, with separate LE and M‑Powered versions augmented by numerous add‑on Toolkits, and some of the features that Avid kept HD‑only were almost universal in rival DAWs. The problem is that this desirability has, until now, been tempered by a fair number of frustrations. These have, no doubt, helped to make the program more appealing to newcomers, but above all, it's the dominance of Pro Tools in professional recording and mixing circles that has fuelled its desirability further down the ladder. The last major update, to Pro Tools 8, thus introduced a huge number of improvements focusing on the 'music creation' side of things. Its strengths in audio recording, mixing and editing have been enhanced, while Avid have worked hard to make it competitive in areas such as MIDI sequencing, where it was previously less able than rival DAWs. The software itself has also undergone radical overhauls in that time, yet unlike some DAWs, Pro Tools has managed to retain the core simplicity and elegance of its two‑window approach. Meanwhile, at the high end, there was the transition from Pro Tools Mix to Pro Tools HD, and the introduction of the hugely powerful Icon control surfaces. Then came the Digi 001, the Mbox and a succession of other affordable native versions, successful ports of the Pro Tools software to Windows and Mac OS X, and the acquisition of M‑Audio. First came Pro Tools Free, a free 'taster' version of the software that would work with a Mac's built‑in hardware. You could point to several milestones along that path. Over the last decade or so, Digidesign and now Avid have done a remarkable job of reversing that situation, to the point where other DAWs such as Nuendo and Logic now incorporate numerous features that originated in Pro Tools. TDM systems represented an affordable and very popular way to get multitrack audio in and out of a computer, and to run DSP‑assisted plug‑ins, but most studios ran Logic or other third‑party software as a 'front end', and the Pro Tools installers gathered dust in a drawer somewhere. Then, the very idea that anyone might actually buy a Pro Tools system for the software would have seemed laughable to many. Things have come a long way since I joined Sound On Sound back in 1998. At a stroke, Pro Tools 9 removes nearly all of these - and with the addition of the new Complete Production Toolkit 2, a native system can acquire all the features of an HD rig apart from those that are hardware‑dependent, making such gems as VCA groups and advanced automation available to native users for the first time. Users of the more affordable native Pro Tools packages, LE and M‑Powered, had long griped about the artificial limitations that kept those packages feature‑poor in comparison with Pro Tools HD. No longer would their market‑leading Pro Tools DAW be tied to Avid's own hardware from now on it would work with any interface that supported the ASIO or Core Audio driver protocols, from the Apogees and Prisms of this world to the built‑in inputs and outputs of a cheap laptop.Īnd that wasn't all. This year's AES show in San Francisco saw the announcement most of us thought we'd never hear: Avid, for so long the most insular manufacturer in the business, were embracing openness. For the first time ever, Avid have made the full Pro Tools feature set available on native systems - and you don't even need one of their interfaces to run it! |
